Summary
The Shiva Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas and is the primary scripture of Shaivism. It extols the glory of Lord Shiva as the Supreme Being (Parabrahman) who is the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the universe. The text is organized into several Samhitas (sections), such as the Vidyeshwara Samhita, Rudra Samhita, and Kotirudra Samhita.
It narrates the origin of the universe from the union of Shiva and Shakti, the stories of Shiva's marriage to Sati and Parvati, the birth of Ganesha and Kartikeya, and the legends associated with the 12 Jyotirlingas.
