Markandeya Purana

The ancient text containing the glorious Devi Mahatmya.

Summary

The Markandeya Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas, narrated by Sage Markandeya to Jaimini. Uniquely, the immediate narrators in the text are four wise birds (Dharmaputras) who answer Jaimini's questions. It is one of the oldest Puranas and is relatively free from sectarian bias, though it contains the most important text of Shaktism.

The most significant part of this Purana is the Devi Mahatmya (also known as Durga Saptashati or Chandi), which extols the greatness of the Divine Mother (Goddess Durga) and her battles against demons like Mahishasura, Shumbha, and Nishumbha. Describing the Goddess as the supreme power (Shakti) behind the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe, it establishes the philosophy of Shaktism. The Purana also covers topics like the cycle of creation, the Manvantaras, and the laws of Dharma.
