Ashramavasika Parva (The Book of the Hermitage)

The departure of the elders, the reunion with the dead, and the final fire.

Summary

The Ashramavasika Parva describes the events fifteen years after the Kurukshetra War. King Dhritarashtra, Queen Gandhari, Kunti, and Vidura decide to renounce the royal life and retire to the forest (Vanaprastha ashrama) to engage in penance. Despite Yudhishthira's pleas, they depart, accompanied by Sanjaya.

The Pandavas later visit them in the forest. During this visit, a miraculous event occurs: Sage Vyasa, through his ascetic power, summons the souls of all the warriors who died in the Kurukshetra War. For one night, the living meet their dead relatives—fathers, sons, husbands, and brothers—dissolving the grief that had plagued them for years. The parva concludes with the death of Vidura (who merges his energy into Yudhishthira) and the eventual death of Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, and Kunti in a forest fire, which they accept with yogic detachment.
